Interview Transcript:

What led you to a career in telecoms?

I think about just over thirty years ago, I saw a front page of a London Evening Standard speaking about mobiles just really becoming mainstream and then about a week later I saw an advert for the organisation to go and work there, so that was it.

What are your core business values?

So, driven. Yeah, I’m looking for individuals really driven in what they are doing. Accountable, so I just want everybody to be accountable. Improvement, so just constant improvement. Successful, and I believe that you, me, everyone just kind of makes a difference.

What do you hope to bring to PCG through the acquisition?

Breadth of products. You know, there is a wide range that I’m looking to bring in. I’m hoping that we can look at how we can maximise our pricing structure between the organisations, and work out how, you know, how we can really grow with our customers as well.

What are you most looking forward to working with PCG?

To a certain extent more of the same. You know, I just want to look at you know, how do we grow. You know if I look at that we’re in the health industry here, we’ve got a small health business in Daisy, how do we create something awesome together.

What – if any – differences will customers see within our business?

One of the reasons why we bought Premier is because you know they really engage with their customers, really looking after the customers, and we want to do more of the same.

What work related achievements are you most proud of?

The training programme that we put out for our staff has definitely, you know, been something that has been really good. Our two stars in the best companies to work for, really proud of what they’ve achieved there. For me personally, we did, just leading up to Christmas we did ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’, cheesy 80s chat show, spin the wheel, you know all the staff were on. I just remember one of the times there was a, one of the girls they had their daughter on and I thought what a great thing. So, we put a separate one on that was just purely for the kids, that they could win, I think one of them won a TV so it was kind of nice.

Can you give us your favourite quote?

Attitudes are contagious, is yours worth catching? I do believe, yeah I just like happy people, you know. I like people, I like to be around people that are just really happy and really enjoy what they’re doing.

Where could we find you when you’re not in the office?

When I’m not in the office, I’m generally in the office. I kind of love work! I enjoy what I do, I enjoy being around people and I enjoy growing businesses and growing people. So if I’m not doing that then I’m maybe on the golf course – maybe. I’m not a great lover [of golf] but I love skiing. I enjoy skiing once a year.

Tea or coffee?

Absolutely coffee. Bouncing off the walls, it’s got to be coffee.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Surprisingly, I like Eminem! If I go to the gym I’ll listen to Eminem, so that’s kind of in the ear. I kind of listen to the words he says more than the song, I think he’s very good at what he does.

Are there any books you’ve read recently that you would recommend?

If you’re looking at teams – Mary Shapiro, Managing Teams, Harvard Business. If you’re looking at businesses, you know probably The Halo Effect [Phil Rosenzweig] that I’ve just recently finished. You know, just kind of easy, good reads.

Who would play you in a movie on your life?

I think my missus would say Ray Winston. Now I’m not sure whether she’d say it because I look like him, or I’m just a ‘Sexy Beast’! You know, it’s one of the two.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

Mobile phone! You know it’s just, it’s evolved. It’s more than a mobile phone now, it’s everything, all in your pocket.

What’s at the top of your bucket list?

I’ll tell you in a years time because I’m currently on the journey for that, to the top of my bucket list. So, I’ll know within a years time what I’ve accomplished.

It’s the staff Christmas party – what are you drinking?

When I took over this part of the business, I decided to stop drinking. So, on that basis, probably sparkling water! If I’m gonna push the boat out, maybe a coke, diet coke, or really – if I’m really going for it – a ginger beer, but that’s it.

And lastly… Can you show us your party trick?

I can find a song that I can put any name, any person’s name into. So, if you give me a person’s name I can put it in a song… [Eva says, “Maria.”] Maria…

*Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday Dear Maria! Happy Birthday to you!*
