Yet another month has passed and still we find ourselves in times of challenge and uncertainty. Last month we reflected on how we as a company, and country, have adapted to the world as we’ve come to know it, but this month we wanted to provide you with some useful information for moving forward.
With the drastic shift towards remote working, many of you will already be taking advantage of at least some elements of VoIP telephony to an extent, however, an additional force will soon require this to be made more permanent…
The PSTN Switch Off is coming! We published an article earlier this month that explains the network level changes coming into play, what services will be terminated and what alternatives may be available for you.
In summary, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is a global term for the interconnection of public telephone networks over copper-based materials. It currently supports analogue lines, ISDN2 and ISDN30, broadband services such as ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) and FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) as well as EFM (Ethernet First Mile) circuits – all of which will be discontinued over the next couple of years with all support ceasing entirely from 2025.
Alternatives include new products such as SOTAP (Single Order Transitional Access Product) and SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access), and increasingly popular solutions including Leased Lines, FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) and IOT (Internet of Things) SIM cards for units utilising GSM (Global System for Mobile communications). In many cases, we’re finding these alternatives are better quality connections that are very competitively priced.
